Pierce County Master Gardener Demonstration Gardens Community Outreach is the primary mission of the Pierce County Master Gardeners. Their demonstration garden, started in 1978, was minimally maintained and did not have a clear vision. Duane Dietz was hired to offer new directions for low impact development, sustainability, and education. By listening to the Master Gardeners, Duane designed a series of “backyard gardens” that replicated typical subdivision yards and provide the framework for showing different lawn types, watering regimes, and the use of native plants. |

Another key element is the creation of a children’s garden that is hands-on, easily understood, and is trackable through a webcam; outdoor lecture space, comparative composting, and a wetland swale that connects the entire garden to the larger wetland to the west. |
